MY OUTDOOR COMPASS
Privacy Policy
Effective July 27, 2026
Our approach
My Outdoor Compass (“Compass,” “we,” “us”) is an outdoor decision-support platform. We collect only the information reasonably needed to provide personalized answers, maintain accounts, protect the service, and improve Compass. We do not sell personal information.
Information we collect
- Account information: email address, display name, authentication provider, account status, and internal user identifier.
- Outdoor profile: optional details such as travel style, RV or camping setup, equipment dimensions, party size, preferences, experience, home region, and gear.
- Questions and conversations: questions, clarification responses, generated answers, feedback, and saved conversation information.
- Location: precise or approximate location only when you choose to enable location access. Browser permission controls remain available to you.
- Community submissions: campground or trip reports, dates, equipment details, site information, text, and optional photographs. Reports are reviewed before public use.
- Technical information: browser storage, authentication sessions, service diagnostics, usage counts, timestamps, and security-related request information.
How we use information
- Personalize outdoor decisions and avoid repeatedly asking for known details.
- Maintain accounts, question allowances, saved profiles, and conversations.
- Retrieve relevant weather, route, road, park, campground, and safety information.
- Moderate community reports and prevent unsafe, abusive, fraudulent, or promotional content.
- Protect Compass, diagnose failures, measure usage, and improve answer quality.
AI and service providers
Compass may send the question and relevant profile, conversation, knowledge, and live-data context to an AI provider to generate a response. Compass currently uses OpenAI for primary answer generation. Account and application data are stored using Supabase. Google and Meta may process information when you choose their sign-in services. Live-information providers process the minimum request information needed to return relevant data.
Each provider operates under its own privacy terms. Compass does not request access to Gmail, Google Drive, Facebook posts, friends, advertising accounts, or unrelated social information when you use social sign-in.
Community information and photographs
New trip reports remain pending until reviewed. Approved reports may contribute to answers with their location, visit date, setup, verification status, report text, and approved photos. We do not intentionally display the contributor’s email address or private account identifier.
Affiliate links
Some relevant recommendations may contain affiliate links. Compass may earn a commission from qualifying purchases at no additional cost to you. Affiliate relationships do not determine the factual answer or confidence level.
Retention and deletion
We retain information while your account is active and as reasonably needed to operate, secure, and improve Compass. You may request deletion using our Data Deletion Instructions. We may retain limited records when required for security, fraud prevention, legal compliance, dispute resolution, or aggregated analytics that no longer identify you.
Your choices
You may decline location permission, omit optional profile fields, remove browser permissions, avoid community submissions, sign out, or request account deletion. Withdrawing information may reduce personalization or prevent location-dependent features.
Privacy rights
Depending on where you live and which laws apply, you may request access to personal information associated with your account, correction of inaccurate information, deletion, or information about how it is used and disclosed. Compass does not sell personal information. We will not discriminate against a user for making a lawful privacy request. Submit requests to the contact address below; reasonable verification may be required.
Security
We use access controls, encrypted connections, restricted service credentials, row-level database policies, private photo storage, and expiring photo links. No online system can guarantee absolute security.
Children
Compass is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly create accounts for them. Family profile details should be entered by an adult and limited to what is relevant for trip planning and safety.
Changes
We may update this policy as Compass develops. Material changes will be identified by a revised effective date and, when appropriate, an in-product notice.
